Today I’ll be ordering bulbs to plant this fall. I’m ordering from Breck’s catalog. I got a coupon for $25 off my purchase, and it expires today. I’d like to order every flower they sell, but that’d be crazy. So, after much thought, and trying to stay in a budget (though not entirely successfully) here’s what I’ll be planting next month.
To bloom in the very early spring, we have some lovely snow crocuses and snow glories.

Then we’ll have these super beautiful Ice Stick Tulips.

After them, it’ll be time for the daffodils to bloom. I went with some Las Vegas and Pink Charm daffodils.

In Mid Spring, the mixture of hyacinths will bloom, but I’ll be featuring those beautiful Muscari Dark Eye hyacinths.

And then for more tulips. I chose a mixture called the Passion Tulip Mixture. And I also went with those really cool Ballade tulips, and in honor of my mother, Shirley tulips.

We’ll end the season with a beautiful mixture of cool irises and these unique Rudy Triteleia.

Wont that be beautiful?! I’m very excited.
It’ll be a lot of work to plant them, though. The ‘dirt’ in our front yard is very rocky and clay like and not at all soil. I’ll have to dig it all out and put in good soil for my happy bulbs to live in through the winter. Ah, the manual labor I’ll sustain for pretty purple flowers…

I’m not sure if any of you have seen “Broken Flowers.” I havent, though I want to. Its a movie out right now, in mostly indy theaters, staring Bill Murray. From what I’ve read, his character goes on a hunt to find the mother of a son he didnt even know he had (as in, he gets a letter from his son, no return address, so he tracks down all the women he was with to find out which one had his son). Apparently, this movie has brought out the, I dont even know what, in people.
You know how much I enjoy reading the “Missed Connections” in our local paper. This week, 3 of the 15, referenced seeing someone at this movie. And now they want to meet up with that person again. Lets read…
Rialto Past Sabath – Sunday matinee, if you watch Broken Flowers I won’t forget to put roses on your grave. Let’s rent Lost in Translation and get lost.
Nothing Could Be Finer – than seeing you at the Carolina Theater, Sat 8/20, Broken Flowers. Bill Murray was great, not quite as good as Garfield. Speaking of which, how about going out for lasagna?
Prettiest Girl In The… – Galaxy. Galaxy Theatre: we sat alone in the same aisle at Lost in Flowers or Broken Translation or whatever it was. May I buy you some goobers?
Heh, I love em.

After my brother went back home, I wondered if anything I had to say sunk in. It’s hard to tell with those teenagers if what you’re saying to them actually registers in their head. Not to mention whether or not they think what you have to say is valuable information. But, now I have proof that he was at least listening at one point in the three weeks he was here.
Donnie told me today that he got his hair trimmed. It sounded like it was a willing decision, not that somebody dragged him to the barber.
During his stay, I took him to get his hair trimmed and thinned, and tried to stress the importance of healthy hair. I broke it down in teenage speak: “Chicks dig healthy hair.” I’ll consider my “lecture” a success.
Unfortunately, that may have been the only thing that stuck. That and the importance of watching The OC.
But it’s a start, right?
Before I get into it, I need to whine for a minute. My feet are so incredibly sore. I went to visit Beth Ann for lunch on West, and instead of parking inches away from my destination, the deck was closed and I had to park miles away and walk. In heels. In really cute by not at all comfortable heels. And now I have blisters. And they hurt. Bad. But lunch was good. I miss Beth Ann.
Now. Television. My favorite past time. I’ve been pondering how to break it down for you. Last year I gave you the run through by day, but nowadays, I rarely watch a show the day it airs. So, let me give you my top shows. I realize not everyone can be as committed and dedicated to TV as I am, so if you only have a few hours a week to spare, these are the shows you should be watching (why? because I said so, and I’m never wrong).
Ellen – Guaranteed to increase your quality of life. I promise. Everybody needs to laugh, and if you’re not laughing at Ellen, then you have no idea what funny is. I Heart Ellen.
The OC – You already know how I love this show. And that I think you’re crazy if you arent watching it.
Veronica Mars – My new love. *kiss*
Gilmore Girls – In its 5th season, this show sure has had its ups and downs. But the relationship between these women never fails to be intriguing. I know boys are afraid to watch this show because its all about women, but if you’re half smart, and at all interested in understanding the ways of a woman, then this show would be an excellent study guide.
nip/tuck – For all the people that wish they were a lot more badass than they actually are. You, too, can live vicariously through Sean, Julia and Christian. This is the most shockingly dirty show I’ve ever seen. And I’m not afraid to admit I enjoy every minute of it.
Grey’s Anatomy – For all those that got tyerd of ER. It’s not just another hospital show.
Desperate Housewives – Even my pastor watches this show.
All the other shows I watch:
Alias – The only reason I didnt recommend this show is because its too damn late for you. If you arent already watching this show, I’m afraid you’ve missed the boat. If you are watching this show, you must be as anxious as I am for the premiere. Unfortunately, it’s not till Sept 29 (though thats better than waiting till January).
Everwood – You know I’m a WB junkie. But really, this show is very good.
Lost – JJ Abrams knows what he’s doing and I trust him.
ER – I’m sorry, I cant stop watching this show. Even after Carter left. Its like caring for a really old dog, you kinda want it to die, put it out of its misery… but at the same time, you dont want it to leave.
One Tree Hill – If I had to drop a show, it’d be this one. Four high schoolers, living in a town on the water, eventually they all hook up with each other… wait, where have I heard that before?
Numbers – The Steve likes this show, and I’ll watch it if there’s nothing else to do. Its good.
Las Vegas – Another show The Steve watches. But there’s no denying Vanessa Marcil’s hotness. I’ll watch.
The Office – I know it’s not as good as the British one. But I’m gonna give it another shot.
My new picks for the fall, will they make it?
Bones – Rachel told me about this show. It has something to do with bones. But, uh, David Boreanaz is in it. That’s enough for me.
Supernatural – Hmm, really, I dont just pick shows because of the cute boys. But, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are the only reason I’m watching this show. It might prove too scary for me, though.
How I Met Your Mother – The premise doesnt sound like it can last too long (but thats what I thought about Lost) I’m desperate for another half hour sitcom.
Kitchen Confidential - I think this show looks really funny. Bradley Cooper, Bonnie Somerville and Jaime King. Mmm mmm good.
Arrested Development – This show has been around and the critics love it. I’ve watched it a couple of times, and I laughed enough. But Charlize Theron is guest starring. We all know how I feel about her.
Love, Inc. – I believe now that UPN can have good TV. I saw a preview for this show and it made me laugh out loud. It has that guy from Rat Race that got his tongue pierced. Heh.
Ghost Whisperer – There’s a 99% chance this show will suck hard. But The Steve loves The Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Inconceivable – I’m intrigued, thats all.
Commander in Chief – Woman president? hell yes. I read an article in Entertainment Weekly, and I have nothing against Geena Davis.
Well, I think that’s it. If I keep all these new shows, that equals 20 hours of television a week. I said I was dedicated.
Though the majority thought I should do my Pampered Chef thing in October, I’ve decided to go with a September Catalog show. I just cant pass up the 60% off stoneware. Listen to this… there are five pieces I want (I may not get them all, but for this example…). The pieces would normally total $168. With the discount, they’ll only cost me $69. Dude. That’s a deal!
So, for all my local friends, you’ll be seeing me with catalog in hand, ready for you to order from me so I can meet my goal and get my discount. Please. You know you want to.
Now, lets shift gears from important kitchen topics to important living room topics. Tomorrow, I’ll be giving you the fall TV guide. I’ll let you know what you should be watching, why I watch what I watch and what my new picks are.
But before I do that. I have to tell you of my newfound love. Its “Veronica Mars.” For reasons I still dont know, I didnt watch this show when it started airing last fall. But, after all the hoopla and grand reviews, UPN was kind enough to air a majority of the season during the summer, and I was able to catch up, and consequently, fall deeply, madly, insanely in love. Why do you love this show, you ask? You know I’m character driven, so leave it up to Veronica herself, the super cute Kristen Bell, to win my heart. This high schooler is smart, witty, sarcastic and she does this adorable scrunching her nose thing. And then there’s Mr. Logan “Is he good or is he bad, I dont know, but I love him so” Eckles. This boy has the charm and dimples of Pacey Witter with a bit more mystery. The last few episodes have sent me into a screaming tizzy (and you should see the way the cats look at me), because I still dont know if Logan is good or bad. Either way, he’s won my heart. No doubt. If great characters arent enough for you, then there’s the dream we all have of being a Private I. Boys get Mr. Mars’ solve a mystery, save the world plot line and girls get Veronica’s solve a mystery, kiss a boy plot line. Its a win win.
I havent watched the Season 1 finale yet. I highly recommend you watch this show in Season 2. Unfortunately for you, the Season 1 dvds dont come out till mid October. Its my Number 2 pick this year (and if you dont know what Number 1 is, you havent been paying attention, shame on you).
