Well, here it is. Day 1 of the 2005-06 Season of NHL Hockey. I know some of you thought I wasnt serious, but I am. I’ve been studying up and everything. Thanks to “Ice Hockey Made Simple” I know everything needed to be a spectator of this lovely sport.
Tonight, I’ll be watching my first game. I’ll be tuning in to see the Carolina Hurricanes play the Tampa Bay Lightning. What a way to start… I hope they kick those stupid Floridians asses. I also have a secret crush on another team, but I cant tell you, its a secret. Leave it to me to bring something as girly as a ‘crush’ into the manly game of hockey.
Unfortunately for me, my dvr is entirely in use this evening, so I’ll be forced to watch the game upstairs, on a normal tv. No pausing or rewinding for me. I’ll have to watch the game the old fashioned way and rely on instant replays for the things I miss. I’m sure I’ll survive… after all I need to prep for going to a live game, no pausing there…
Now, lets take a quiz. Make sure you’re ready for the season to start. Feel free to post your answers in my comments.
1. What year was the National Hockey League (NHL) formed?
2. In what year did the first spectator die from injuries related to being hit by a puck?
3. In 1998 the distance from the red goal lines to the endboards was increased to 13 feet. Starting with this season, the line has been pulled back, to how many feet?
4. When a referee crosses his arms, what penalty is he calling?
5. What is a power play?
6. When calculating a teams standing, how many points are awarded for winning a game?
7. Which team has won the most Stanley Cup Finals?
Good luck. And dont forget to watch a game tonight. Plenty to chose from.

Excellent job, Patrick. Though, my handy book says that when a ref crosses his arms, he’s calling a penalty for Icing. I like Icing because it reminds me of cake. In my book, cross checking is called by the ref clenching both his fists and extending them out from the chest in a forward and backward motion. But, I’ll let you have it, since you PLAY the sport and all. What do I know, I’m just a one-day old spectator.
Thanks Nick, it was sad to watch. Hopefully they’ll do better at their first home game tomorrow. I’m not abandoning them (yet).
